| AT
|
| |
| The
AT form factor was the de facto design for motherboards and
computer cases. You can tell an AT case by the fact that the
serial and parallel port connectors are attached to the motherboard
via a cable. Also the cards are designed to go over the CPU
and memory. With the advent of larger components on the motherboard
(namely memory and CPU) this design was prone to overheating
and no longer practical. The ATX form factor soves those issues
by reorienting the placement of components and is the standard
for computers in use today. |

| ATX |
| |
| A
standard that orients the motherboard in the computer case to
use less heat and more efficient use of space. It also has a
different power connector that allows the computer to be completely
turned off from the desktop. If you have an ATX motherboard you
need an ATX case, but some ATX cases will still allow for an
AT motheboard. |

| ATX
Power Supply |
| |
|
The ATX power supply is
directly connected to the motherboard allowing the computer
to be turned on and off from the keyboard. The obvious benefit
is that you don't need to go to your computer case every time
you want to turn your computer on or off. The ATX power supply
accomplishes this by keeping a small electrical current running
through the motherboard. It is important to properly protect
the computer against power surges, because they are susceptible
even when turned off.
