DIMM

(Dual Inline Memory Module) The memory module used in most computer systems. Memory modules in older systems needed to be installed in pairs (they were known as SIMMS). With the advent of DIMMS, a single memory module can be installed unpaired.

DDR SDRAM

This is a new type of SDRAM that is being used in computers. It theoretically doubles the memory performance over traditional SDRAM modules.

DIP SWITCH

A group of tiny switches that are built into a circuit board and allow for a degree of customization. Dip switches are configured to be either in an on or off position and the combination of ons and offs are what configures the computer.

DRIVE BAYS

A Drive bay is an opening in the computer case that holds the computers hard drives CD-ROM drives and Floppy drives. There are half height and full height drive bays to accomodate different sized components. There are also plastic removable covers over some of the bays to allow for outside access to the component.

DVD(Digital Video Disk)

Similar to a CD-Rom drive, it reads special DVD disks that hold up to 4.7GB of data as opposed to a typical CD's 650MB. Due to its large storage capacity the defacto purpose for a DVD drive is to play back movies, but as storage needs increase, DVD drives will soon become the de-facto method of file storage and retrieval.
