| SERIAL
PORT |
| |
|
A port used with communication
devices. These ports are labeled Serial Ports because they
only transmit one bit at a time. This makes them considerably
slower than many current devices. Serial Ports are used for
various devices such as a computer mouse, keyboard or printer.

| SLOT
1 |
| |
|
Slot 1 is a format developed by Intel
for their Pentium II and III CPU's and later extended to the
Celeron line as well. It places the whole CPU onto a single
edge (SEC) cartridge, and many times incorporates the heatsink
and cooling fan assembly into the package. This allowed for
easier installation as well as larger available cache
sizes. The slot method of CPU packaging is being fazed out
as the benefits of socket style CPU's are being realized now
that cache memory is being directly placed on the dye itself.

| SLOT
A |
| |
|
Slot A When INTEL would
not license their Slot 1 packaging design to AMD for use in
their new Athlon CPU, AMD went ahead and developed the Slot
A format designed to compete with the Intel Pentium II and
III. This design places the complete CPU assembly along with
its cache memory and the heatsink and cooling fan mechanism
onto a single edge cartridge (SEC). This allows for easier
installation and more efficient operation. AMD is phasing
out its production of Slot A CPU's as it concentrates on the
faster and cheaper socket style CPU's that feature the cache
memory incorporated into the chip dye.

Socket 370 This socket
style format was developed by Intel for their economical Celeron
processor But will now be used for the whole Intel line of
CPU's including the newest Pentium IV's.
