| OVERVIEW |
| |
| Your
Hard Drive is the main storage system in your computer. It contains
EVERYTHING, (even lots of stuff you don't necessarily want),
your programs (including your operating system), your data,
your frequently frequented (wasn't that a hit record in the
sixties?) Internet sites, and alot of other junk. The hard drive
stores your information on aluminum or glass platters and is
integral to your system. Since so much of what is stored on
your hard drive is accessed during usage, a slow hard drive
will significantly slow down your system as your computer hunts
for a free area in which to stick your information (kind of
like looking for a parking spot in New York City). Toady's multimedia
heavy programs are more and more memory intensive, where a 1
or 2 gigabyte drive used to be sufficient, these days you shouldn't
buy anything |

| |
| ULTRA ATA/66 |
| |
|
This is another of those
things where you should know that you need it even before
you know what it is. ATA (Advanced Technology Attachment)
is the name of the interface that connects your Hard Drive
to your Motherboard and the rest of your computer. The faster
the interface can move your data from the hard drive to the
processor, then obviously the faster your computer can go
(think of your computer as one pig potential bottleneck).
Initially it's never a problem. The interface is much faster
than the peripheral attached to it, and everyone thinks that
this is the best it's gonna get and leave it at that. Then
of course the Peripherals get faster (and they get faster
in a hurry) and the Interface guys have to catch up. Ultra
ATA/66 is the caught up technology that lets your computer
access your hard drives information at the accelerated pace
that today's programs demand. But don't worry too much, all
of toady's current Motherboards and Hard Drives are ULTRA
ATA/66 and don't look now but Ultra ATA/100 is already here
and fast becoming the industry standard.

| I FEEL THE NEED FOR SPEED |
| |
|
Rpm's (revolutions per minute) are
how fast your Hard Disk drive turns it's platters. (Your information
is stored on glass or aluminum platters). A faster rate means
a faster drive. Drives sold today come in three speeds, 5400
Rpm's, 7200 Rpm's and the latest, greatest, fastest, baddest,
hard drive travels at a whopping 10,000 revolutions per minute.
(positively revolutionary)

| IS BIGGER BETTER? |
| |
|
Of course it is! (at least
when it comes to Hard Drives, and get those sick thoughts
out of your head!). But bigger is also more expensive. So
the question is how much you need, want, and most importantly...can
afford.

|
| |
| 10-20 GB HARD DRIVES |
| (Recommended) |
You
need this size if:
- You download Audio or Video files.
- You have many programs stored on
your Hard Drive
- You want to make sure your Hard
Drive will last a couple of years before you either have
to delete files or upgrade your Hard Drive
|
| |
|
|
|
|
|
| |
| MORE THAN 20GB |
| |
- If you REALLY have lots of stuff
on your Hard Drive
- If you want to brag about having
the biggest hard drive on the block
