When
people think computer power the first thing they think about is the processor
speed. And for good reason. The CPU is the engine that makes the computer
run. Where Intel used to be the hands down performance leader when it came
to Power CPU's, it now faces serious competition from its competitor AMD.
The fastest processor on the market today is the Intel Pentium IV running
at 1.5Ghz. There are serious latency issues that keep it from being our
power CPU. Latency is a series of extra steps that a component has to perform
in order to function. Therefore if a processor has to work an additional
fifty percent, it would still run slower than a chip that runs thirty percent
slower.
AMD's Athlon (dubbed the Thunderbird) is now the best performing CPU on the market. Even though the Athlon runs at 1.33Ghz it handily outperforms Intels Pentium IV running at 1.5Ghz. For this reason we chose the Athlon as our chip of choice in our Power PC.
