The WAV file is a program used to record and play various sound events. Perhaps the most famous WAV file is the little "You Have Mail" sound that AOL users hear when it is time to check their Inbox for EMAIL. Basically it converts an analog sound into a wave form pattern. When it needs to reproduce that pattern it recreates the wave form pattern it recorded. This process is very memory intensive, especially at CD quality recording.
